Throwback Thursday

To celebrate the top 10 debut of the BRILLIANT Lay It Down album, I decided for this weeks Throwback Thursday I'd roll with the soulful Al Green. In 1972 he released one of my favorite albums of all time Im Still Inlove With You, which Rollingstone ranked at number 285 on their list of 500 greatest albums of ALL time. One of my favorite tracks from the classic album was the track "Im Glad Your Mine." From the amazing intro with the drums to the subtle strings, it automatically became a favorite of mine before I could even appreciate what it was I was listening to....now sit back and ENJOY

Another week, another throwback...seems like times flying isnt it?...anyhoo this weeks throwie comes from The Dramatics with their song "Oceans of Thoughts and Dreams" from their 1977 album Shake it Well.

The Dramatics (formerly The Dynamics) were a soul music vocal group, formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1962. They changed their name by 1967, when they garnered their first minor hit, "All Because of You." However, the group did not break through until their 1971 single, "Whatcha See Is Watcha Get."

This is my favorite song by the group, many of you may remember the beat but not
know where to place it. Beyonce and her back up singers sampled it for the song "Girl"from their lackluster album Destiny Fulfilled (honestly yall, that album was asthought out and properly executed as an Aretha Franklin work out tape..i canhear papa knowles now sayin CAN WE GET THIS SHIT OUT THE WAY SO BEYONCE CAN DROP!!!)...Anyhoo..ENJOY and share ur thoughts!!!

Anyhoo...this weeks throwie thursday comes from Erma Franklin, sister of another more well known Franklin, singing the ORIGINAL version of "Piece of my Heart"...Many of you know this as a Janis Joplin song, when in all actuality hers was just a remake with a different arrangement, not to take away from Janis' version (because I absolutely adore it) but CLEARLY Erma upped the soul factor.

Erma was born in Shelby,
Mississippi, but moved several times during her childhood before settling in Detroit, Michigan.
Her mother Barbara (Erma's
middle name, 'Vernice', was also her mother's middle name), who was a gospel
singer, left the family when she, her two sisters, and her brother were young
children. Erma and her sisters, Aretha and Carolyn, sang at their
father, Reverend C. L. Franklin's,
Detroit-area Baptist church.

Throwback Thursday

This weeks Throwie thursday comes from the Grammy award winning group The Fifth Dimension. Their 1967 hit "Up up and Away" became a break out hit for the Pop group, peeking at number 7 on the pop charts and earning them 4 grammys at the 1968 ceremony, including both Record and Song of the year. I absolutely adore this song and it was one of the first songs I heard from the group and it peeked my interest, then of course I listened to their 1969 number 1 hit "Age of Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in" and it was a wrap. Take a look at the group perform "Up up and away" and just appreciate the brilliance of the horns and the strings..ugh

The musical GENIUS that is George Benson won a grammy back in 1977 for his hit "The Masquerade" and its this weeks throwie thursday. This song was number 1 on the pop, jazz and R&B charts. This man is the reason why im SO picky when it comes to my male vocalist of today...when u grew up listening to this, Frankie Beverly, Donny Hathaway and others... the fellows out now can't even make me raise an eyebrow....now PLEASE...CLICK PLAY!

Throwback Thursday

This weeks throwie thursday i decided to go with an artist thats been in my heavy rotation alot lately, Singer/Song writer/Fierce bitch Miss Carole King with the song "Tapestry" from one of the best albums of all time Tapestry. Not only is the album critically acclaimed, and a personal favorite of mine, it sold like hot cakes! check it out.

Tapestry would remain on the charts for nearly six years and sell over 10
million copies in the United States alone, an estimated 22 million world-wide,
remaining her most popular album among fans and critics alike. The album
garnered four Grammy Awards including Album of the Year; Best Pop Vocal
Performance, Female; Record of the Year ("It's Too Late"); and Song of the Year
("You've Got a Friend").

Along with being an amazing musician Carole has penned songs for dozens of artist, most notably "Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin, "Some Kind Of Wonderful" by Marvin Gaye and "If its Over" by Mariah Carey, just to name a VERY FEW.

Better late than never yall...But for this week i decided to roll with a song thats been back in my heavy rotation lately...its Diana Ross' "Top of the World"...ive ALWAYS loved this track...from the laid back breathy vocals to the strings, its definately a diana fav in my book.. Enjoy you guys

Hey guys, I figured since I lagged last week with throwie thursday (thanks mo) that this week i'll give u 2 for the price of 1!!!! With both of these legends gracing the grammy stage last Sunday, and the mini drama that took place afterwards, I figured what 2 better artist could I choose other than Miss Aretha Franklin, the QUEEN of soul and Miss Tina Turner, the QUEEN of rock&roll?

Both of these songs happen to be my personal favorites of Tina and Arethas...First up we have "Call me" by the 20 time Grammy award winner Aretha Franklin and the song comes from her 1970's album This Girl's inlove With You. Next we got the 8 time grammy award winning Tina with "River Deep, Mountain High" which was released as a single in 1966 and produced by Phil Spector....I hope u all enjoy!!!

It seems like alot of you enjoyed Mr. Bobby Caldwell last week, so this thursday I decided to bust out another one of my all time favorites from a male vocalist(im VERY picky when it comes to them) by the name of Don Blackman. His self titled debut album was released back in 1982 and due to horrible promotion (which means it MUST have been genius) the album never quite garnered the success it should have, but the stand out song that is "Holding you, Loving you" continues to shine to this very day, and is favored by many genius musicians and producers, the song is absolutely amazing..simplistic yet elaborate...do yourself a favor and check out his AllMusic page or visit Donblackman.com, after you click PLAY on the music player ofcourse :-)

Pianist/singer/writer Don Blackman, born 1953 in Queens, NY, grew up surrounded by jazz influences; a cousin was McCoy Tyner's friend and saxophonist Charles McPherson — a Charlie Parker disciple — was Blackman's neighbor. Blackman played with McPherson's group in 1968 alongside Sam Jones and Louis Hayes when he was 15 years old.

Throwback thursday is BACK! and what better way to bring it back than with the genius that is Bobby Caldwell's "What you Wont Do for Love". This is on my LONG list of all time favorite songs. You cant help but let The horns speak to you and the lyrics are absolutely beautiful, and you may have heard this song already! it was sampled 4345654645 of times by various artist from Da Brat to Aaliyah , but best remembered being sampled by Tupac on "Do For Love" back in '97. For this weeks throwback I chose one of my favorite Barry White tracks "Honey Please, Cant You See", I love how uptempo and fun this song is, ofcourse along with the back up! (they GETTIN IT). This song came out in 1974 and came between 2 of Barrys BIGGEST records, "Never gonna give you up" and "Cant Get Enough of Your Love Babe" and thats why it isnt as popular or one of his most memorable, but im inlove with it, and I hope you enjoy it too

Hey readers, I LOVE old school music and truthfully I listen to it more than the popular music of today, so i figured id share some of the stuff i have in heavy rotation with you guys...reminisce, discover new-old music, or just jam out..but either way, every Thursday will bring a different throwback song that Ive been listening to, i figured we gotta get some type of consistency in this joint...By throwback, NO I'm NOT talkin about a SWV song or an old Badboy artist...This week we have Miss Loleatta Holloway with her 1970s hit "Dreamin"...Ive ALWAYS loved the over the top sass of this song, and of course the back up...with lyrics like "I see that look in your eyes when he walks by...I know you wanna touch him but honey don't u try...Cuzz u dont stand a snow balls chance in hell, you'll make out better trying to unring a bell" you CANT HELP but do a neck roll and a finger snap...see...SASS!
